I would also contend that truly “powerful speeches” are those rooted in substance and about the issues with painstaking blunt detail and far less platitudes, but those type of speeches are not the norm and would not rest well with the majority of any population.

I see right through his bullshit speeches, not in a conspiratorial sense, but in a fluff-and-empty-generalizations sense. He barely discussed hard policy at all in campaign stump speeches (not that McCain did), part of it is of course is subtle manipulation and oratory tactics you talk about, but the bigger portion is that the majority of supporters glue on this sort of bs naturally, like brain dead zombies, they like generic messages they can latch onto and imply their own subjective meaning.

I always knew how people fell for good public speakers even when they were crooks…..I have listened to crooks that I even believed….public speaking is the most manipulative art used in being successful in many endeavors….I wish most people would realize as you have shown that…..it is a method…..you have defrocked the public speaker….that makes me happy…people should know.

The parts of the speech you reference are about maintaining the empire, crushing our enemies, and getting the changes made in international finance that the US wants– in domestic terms palatable to people who don’t think we (I’m from the US) have massive protectionist subsidies, are an empire, etc.
There is a lot of doublethink within the American mind when it comes to Amerca’s role in the world. Our leaders have a more sophisticated version of the same doublethink going on.
